Basemode is on Figma Community

Until today, getting your tokens from Figma into Basemode meant downloading a zip, unzipping it somewhere safe, opening the Figma desktop app and importing a plugin from its manifest. It worked, but it was a lot of steps before you could press one button.

The Basemode plugin is now on Figma Community. Open it on Figma Community to install it in one click.

What the plugin does

The plugin reads the variables and styles in a Figma file and publishes them to your Basemode design system. Your tokens show up in Basemode within a few seconds, ready for the rest of your team. On paid plans, Basemode also opens a pull request with the new tokens, so developers can review and merge them like any other change.

It works on every Figma plan, including free ones. You don't need Enterprise access to Figma's variables API.

Get started

1. Open it from Figma Community. On the Basemode page, choose Open in… and pick the file that holds your variables. After that, it's in your plugins, or you can search for "Basemode" in Actions (⌘ / on Mac, Ctrl / on Windows).
2. Paste your design system key. In Basemode, open your design system and copy the key under Bring in your tokens. It starts with bm_. Figma remembers it on this computer, so you only do this once.
3. Press Publish to Basemode. That's it. The next time your variables change, publishing is a single click.

What's better than the zip

• About a minute to set up. No unzipping, no manifest, no folder to keep around.
• Works in the browser. The zip needed the Figma desktop app. The Community plugin runs wherever you use Figma.
• Updates on its own. When we ship a new version, you get it automatically. With the zip, you had to download it again.

If your organization blocks Figma Community plugins, the download is still on the integrations page, with steps for the desktop app.

If you don't use hosted Basemode, the plugin's Download JSON for the CLI button saves the same data for basemode generate --input.
